Don’t you love it when you hear a familiar beat and suddenly you find yourself pulling *that* face and grooving like it’s going out of style?
There’s something about a producer that can mix up a familiar track from yesteryear and do it justice.
Seriously. Too many of them
fuck it up don’t consider how to keep the essence and beauty of the original song in their new school remixes. I’m looking at you guy that creates most of Jason Derulo’s songs. No hate though, I just can’t ‘Swalla’ most of his music, (corny and terrible, I know!)
Anyway, here are some noteworthy samples I’ve come across recently and I love each because they mostly just crept up on me as good music should (thanks YouTube Autoplay).
Note: Music is subjective, don’t like it? move along, be happy, enjoy your life fam.
Another note: I’m more inclined to hip-hop and R&B, sometimes pop, see Note 1.
Okay, let’s begin:
Zendaya ft. Chris Brown: Something New
Ayyyy, that TLC Creep sample. Easy on the ears, her vocals are on point. It’s an oldy but a goody. Slip it into your party playlist for an easy kick back.
I give it 4 shimmies of approval.
Wretch 32 ft. Kojo Funds, Jahlani: Tell Me
Yup. That’s the late, great Whitney Houston’s It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay with some Afro pon di beat. I LOVE the subtle sample of this beat, plus the slight Dancehall/Reggae flair.
African gyal whine 4 times for dis beat.
Chris Brown: Questions
I have to be honest, this song had to grow on me because I’m a fan of the original (Kevin Lyttle’s Turn Me On). I do like the uptempo new school vibe this one has though. It’s a fun one to include in your summer playlist – short shorts plus the Dutty Whine. Have yourself a good time.
3 bops for the tune.
Kid Ink ft. Ty Dolla $ign: F* Wit U
Again, this one grew on me. A catchy summer tune that samples Tamia’s So Into You with a very poppy and Ty Dolla $ign-esque flair.
A good 3 shimmies for this one.
Ty Dolla $ign ft YG: EX
Hate it or love it. That sample of 112 Only You (Bad Boy Remix) is a BOP! Who doesn’t do ‘the face’ and a slow electric slide when they hear it? You? You a lie.
I’m sure this one will grow on you. I give it 4 bops of approval.
Every Tory Lanez Song. EVER.
Okay, maybe not all of them, but the man has released a series of samples using a number of familiar tunes. The song that gained him widespread recognition – sample. His next big song – sample. The Chixtape 4. A whole bunch of samples.
Tory Lanez is like that guy that’s always at the party and when he’s around, we all have a good time but if he left, things wouldn’t necessarily get better or worse.
For this list, I chose Come Back To Me which samples Wayne Wonder’s No Letting Go. It’s a personal favourite just because it gives me much nostalgia and I like the freshness of this remix. 4 shimmies for the tune and countless replays for my well-being.
I hope this list got you doing some foot taps or slight head bops. What are some of your favourite samples? Share the music and let me know in the comments below.
